Who better to teach you than experienced tutors with up-to-date, relevant and extensive on-site experience?

We have highly skilled lecturers; even our Managing Director has years of practical experience, as well as technical knowhow, and is still actively involved with site work. This allows us to relate classroom learning to real world scenarios. Our lecturers have a wide range of experience involving installations and maintenance in domestic, commercial, and industrial settings.

Our approach to learning is slightly different to some other providers; we believe you should actually enjoy the experience. For this reason, we foster an easy-going atmosphere set in comfortable surroundings, which we believe makes the process of learning much easier and above all more enjoyable. If you combine this with the fact that we limit our class sizes to allow more one and one time with the tutor, you come up with the secret to our students’ success.

Rick Douglas

Tutor in Electrical Installations

Rick teaches on the Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma course, as well as 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, 2391 Inspection and Testing and BS 7909 Temporary Power Systems.

He has over 25 years experience working as a technician in the professional entertainment and electrical industries on temporary events and exhibitions. Before moving into the heritage sector, Rick started working in professional theatre, then progressed to live events and outside broadcast work.

Simon Lewis

Tutor in Electrical Installations

Simon joined Erudite in October 2020 with over 38 years’ experience in petrochemical commercial industries, specifically involved in high voltage distribution networks.

He brings a solid electrical understanding to a wide variety of our courses.

In his spare time Simon enjoys walking, tending to his garden and tinkering with cars

Barry Wheeler

Tutor in Electrical Installations

Barry teaches on the Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma courses as well as Building Regulations, Portable Appliance Testing and specialises in practical techniques in our workshop.

With an extensive background in teaching and learning (including BSL qualifications), along with being a qualified Assessor, he also has wealth of electro-mechanical knowledge and builds electric motorcycles as a hobby!

John Mason

Senior Tutor in Electrical Installations

John joined Erudite Training in the Summer of 2019 from Hugh Baird College in Liverpool. With 40+ years’ background in the electrical field and 18 years as a teacher, John brings a wealth of experience to our team as Senior Lecturer.

His style in the classroom is one of inclusivity and fun. Be prepared to get involved, be stretched and, even more importantly, enjoy your learning!

Paul Charles

NVQ Assessor

Paul Charles has spent over 30 years teaching and assessing in the electrical industry. Throughout this time, he has developed bespoke training for companies from teaching wiring a 13 amp plug to an appliance, at one of the scale, to safe systems of work for radar systems at the other.

In his free time, he is learning to play the guitar, both electric and acoustic.

Simon Ogborn FIET MSET LCGI

Simon is our Managing Director but still has a passion for teaching and does so on various courses up to Design and Verification. He has been an Electrical Engineer for over 30 years and has been teaching since 2005. He is also a qualified Further Education Lecturer (Cert. Ed.) and has Fellowship of the IET (FIET).

We offer instalment plans on our Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma, Domestic Electrical Installer and NVQ Assessment.

The staged payment plan will depend on which type of course (evening, weekdays or weekend). The agreement will be based on the total price – initial deposit which is needed to secure your place and can be divided over the number of months of the course. The total monthly payments need to be paid in full 2 weeks prior to the course end date.

Some of our courses do require qualifications, each course page will inform you of what, if any, experience is needed.

We know all too well that work commitments can get in the way of training plans, and that can really hold aspiring electricians back. So, we have Level 2 and 3 classes available on a choice of Saturdays or evenings, including distance learning being available on some.

Evening classes are usually run on consecutive Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings, 6pm – 9pm.

Saturday classes are run every other Saturday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

Any resources or equipment needed to complete your course must be brought with you on day 1 of your course.

Lunch is not provided at the centre, though we do offer complimentary tea, coffee, juice and biscuits. There are several establishments within walking distance of the centre.

You will receive online exam results right away, assessments and written exams can take a few weeks.

City & Guilds are often the go-to choice for many qualifications, so you may be wondering why we’ve chosen to use EAL.

Although we are already a City & Guilds centre, after careful consideration we’ve decided to offer our students the EAL Level 2 and Level 3 Diplomas. Although the lesser known awarding body of the two throughout all subjects, EAL are very well known within the electrical industry, so much so that they’ve extensively linked up with the NICEIC.

We also greatly favour the assessment structure of EAL’s Level 2 and 3 Diplomas. In contrast to one big examination being taken at the end of the course, the EAL assessments are taken on an ongoing basis throughout the length of the course. We also use this examination format within our Domestic Installer Course, and find it takes away a lot of the pressure and enables students to confidently focus on each step at a time.

Both the City & Guilds and EAL Level 2 and 3 Diplomas are interchangeable, meaning that if you’ve already completed the Level 2 with City & Guilds, you’re more than welcome to finish with our EAL Level 3.

Once qualified as a Domestic Electrical Installer the next step is to register with the Competent Person Scheme – information about this is available on the Gov.uk website here: https://www.gov.uk/building-regulations-competent-person-schemes/overview

The following measures are in place for your safety and comfort:

  • Please bring your own face covering
  • Any resources eg. reference books or equipment needed to complete the course must be brought with you on day 1 of your course.  We are unable to provide spare books or equipment.
  • Please queue up on the entrance path (Signs erected in windows to encourage social distancing).
  • You will be invited to enter the centre, where the door will be opened by a team member to avoid you touching high contact points. Please respect the distance guidelines as you enter reception – tape on the floors.
  • A team member will take the register in reception
  • To gain entry after breaks and lunch please make use of the newly installed ‘Elbow Button’
  • It is mandatory to use the sanitising stations located in reception and at the top of the stairs throughout the day
  • Our refectory will be closed until further notice; you will be asked what drink you would like to be brought to class
  • You will be allocated your own desk
  • Windows will be open to help with circulation (please bring an extra jumper!)
  • During break times the ladies’ toilets will be open to everyone, to avoid increased traffic in the gents
  • At lunch time please vacate your classroom and go to the local cafes or your vehicle – the centre staff will need to sanitise the empty classroom at lunch time
  • Upon re-entering the centre please re-sanitise your hands
  • High touch points will be sanitised regularly throughout the day by centre staff
  • We have followed HSE’s core guidance on managing risk together with HSE regulations for England
